Does splitting a cable connection through a router, decrease speed for all computers on LAN? (vs. having another IP)

Just wondering,

Does a router slow down the available bandwidth to all computers on the router.

Say vs. having the ISP allot multiple IPs for one connection?

The only way that a router would slow down your connection is if that it could not handle your conenction coming in. This only happens with some of the lower class routers. Brands like D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, and SMC will work fine. Also, adding another IP will not necessarly add bandwidth because it depends on other factors such as other people using their cable connections at the same time and the overall traffic congestion on the Internet
 
Yeah, all the routers nightowl mentioned have a 10BaseT WAN port where your cable/dsl line connects. This can easily handle 1Mbps from most services, not sure of top throughput.

The other scenario would be that all computers on the LAN are d/l'ing at the same time so either one would hog the bandwidth or they would all share about evenly.
