i haven't seen any since the wegas came out. my dad is looking for a new 36" but he's a sony fanboy even though i know they're overpriced. i don't think my dad cares for a flat screen and i want to save him some money so i want to go with a non-flat sony tv but am not sure if sony even makes anything other than wegas or xbr.

You can pick up some old models (i.e. nonflat 32" and 35") if you hunt around, but i dont think they produce anymore non-flat screens over 27".

Not sure if theres one in the area, but City Furniture (down here in South Fla) has a bunch of the 35" Sony Non-Flat trinitrons.

i honestly think you're doing him a disservice by steering him away from the flat screens. They may be more money (especially sonys), but they will pay off when you're trying to close blinds in the family room and playing with lighting trying to kill the glare. I dunno..i wish i had a flat screen. That may be my next purchase.

ALL sonys are expensive, but IMO they are worth the extra money. I paid $620 for that 35" last year. We also paid $1320 for a 32" Sony HDTV (32HS500) a few weeks ago.

they are worth the money if you HAVE the extra money to spare. but in terms of cost-performance ratio, i myself prefer toshibas, panasonics, jvc, etc. i do have to admit sonys are unremarkably reliable. my family came to america in 1984. since then i believe we went through 2-3 tvs. ALL SONYs. and most of the time we ditch them because the colors start to fade or it gets a little blurry. but never had it just died on us. i guess that's why my dad loves sony.

You're pretty confident in Sony for someone who asked 8 billion questions before you bought it. (the 32HS500);):p

Sonys are great TV's, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced if you ask me. There are competitors that are just as good that can be had for far less.

well basically i'm shopping for a tv based on what my dad wants because if it's what i want, i'd go for a non-sony flat screen. but my dad wants a sony and doesn't care if it's flat so i'm trying to find one that matches both that criteria.

Can you list some of the features that interest your dad?

Maybe we can help you pick a TV. :D

Well we saw the Samsung 32" (cheapest HDTV) and the Sony 32" (most expensive) side by side on an HDTV signal at CC. There is no comparison. And IMO, the $250 or so difference was WELL worth it.

As for the questions i asked, that was when i was looking at the Samsung at first. Hence the questioning. Ive been VERY happy with my 35" sony for over a year now.

my dad doesn't even use any of the features that's on any existing tv we have. he's pretty old fashion and as long as he can watch regular cable on it, he's fine. even a low end magnavox or rca tv would fit his needs. but the thing with my dad is he wants quality regardless of the price. and he loves sony. i dont think he'll budge from that. but too bad the only thing sony dishes out in a 36" nowadays are the wegas and xbr, both have features he wouldn't even be able to understand to use. but i'll try to persuade him into another brand.

basically his only two criteria right now is:

1) 36"
2) SONY (although i'll try to change it)

that's pretty much it!

I would consider Toshiba sony's closer competetor. The have a VERY nice looking 36" non-flat. Although, the screen is a little too curved IMO, its produces a fantastic picture.

the sony may very well be better than the samsung, but unless both tv's are adjusted to their full potential, there should have been no comparison made... but then thats not how people shop.

Well i adjusted them & tweaked them for about 15 minutes. The Samsung just couldnt match the clarity and the detail of the sony.
