Does software affect quality of a burn/success rate of burns

Hi there, I was wondering if the software you use to burn DVD/CDs has an affect on quality or success rate of the burns?

I'm trying to go completely freeware and I'm wondering if I can live without Nero.

Are you burning video or data?

I've always had good success with DVD Decrypter and some more expensive software (i.e. Gear Pro). Current versions of NERO work great for me as well but I did have issues in some of the earlier NERO versions that supported DVD burning.

Nero is good. Why would you take chances? I downloaded free stuff before and had errors.

If you get a NEC ND3540, you get Nero for free.
