In class today, our teacher told us how everyone else uses sugar in soda except for the US (we use corn syrup instead) cause the sugar companies are a monopoly and stuff...

Just curious..heh

I'm sure it's slightly different in the various countries around the world, owing to local differences in temperature, preparation, etc. However, in India, it could kill you. I personally didn't notice much of a difference between US soda and European soda, but I did notice a few different varities.

gnuel3 - Corn syrup, as far as I understand it, is just sugar made from corn.

Who drinks diet?
And don't they substitute sugar etc with chemicals in diet coke, so there would be a difference that isn't related to corn syrup/sugar?

It's great for doing sport. You can drink as much as you want and don't get any stomach-ache(cuz there isn't sugar in there :D)

Yep, many of the additives are banned in various countries. I assume they adjust the receipe a bit for different sugar replacement formulas as well.

Sprite in the US is very different from Sprite in Canada, I can tell you that... tastes more like flavored seltzer over in canada. In some countries Sprite is the drink.

I would love to be able to get the "coke with lemonade" like they sell in Germany. Man i lived on that stuff. Ive tried the stuff here in the states but it just doesnt taste the same. Maybe it is because they use sugar instead of corn syrup.

Hey I just realized that you said the US, not Canada and I looked on my coke can. Yep... sugar, not corn syrup. I've gotta try some coke down there some time so I can see what this corn syrup stuff tastes like.

Coke/ Pepsi taste so much better in Turkey and France. It's too heavy here in the US. Canada also forbad's Caffeine.. so none of that in Canada and some parts of the world

What exactly is corn syrup anyway?
High Fructose Corn Syrup you mean? Its a complex sugar carbohydrate. It's harder to break down than glucose. It's basically a form of sugar made artificially and cheaper than sugar cane.
