Does SETI@home really do something or is it just nice to look at?

Does this program really do anything important? It looks cool, but what am I actually contributing to society? What are all these calculations it's doing?

You're searching for aliens that don't want to be found. :)

Use the command line version and get rid of that screen saver that slows the whole process down.

It's arguable as to if it is worth it. I don't think that it is, so I don't do it.

I don't do it for energy reasons (trying to keep power bill as low as possible), but otherwise I think it's a worthy cause. I doubt they'll find anything, but it will be wonderful if they do.

It would be.... The general populace will never catch wind of it.

I prefer to use my computers' time to do something of more immediate benefit to mankind. There is a place for astronomical research, and if that's your thing, that's fine, but I prefer to help solve the mysteries of diseases that afflict people whom are my relatives, and people whom I know well.

For more SETI info and tips on how to tweak your client head over to the Distributed Computing forum. :)

The main focus of the SETI project is to search for ET life forms. The client analyzes data captured for "signals" that would indicate someone or something is out there Also, despite what some detractors think, it's also doing more scientific research than just "looking for little green men".

I don't have a link to the additional scientific benefits of SETI but they do exist.

Hehe... Looks like this post got moved. ;)

There are tons of other DC projects out there: Distributed Folding, SB, D20L, Folding at Home, United Devices, etc, etc, etc...

If you've got your PC on anyway your not going to notice any difference to your bill by running a DC project

Yes, Seti does things.
For serious Seti people it does not look nice. You don't run the parts that "look nice" because that reduces the amount of work you get done!

Seti is the pioneer distributed computing project with over 4 million members crunching on millions of computers getting the seti data analysis done in a fraction of the time it would have taken otherwise, which of course makes way for more science to be done in the future.

Because of the success of the seti@home project many other distributed computing projects have come to be. Without it there likely would not be any of the other DC projects running at all. (who can know?)

So, advances in the science of distributed computing should be at the top of the list of "what this project does".

Seti2 will do more science with more data, hopefully there will be some astromical discoveries.

Maybe after all the data is studied there will be some alien signals found, who knows.

Somewhere on the list of what's good about the project should be the fact that teams like TeAm AnandTech Seti have been formed doing the project. Many good things have come from this :D

Importants, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. It's up to each individual as to what DC project is the "most beneficial" to me, or humanity.

Here are a few links on other science being done with the SETI data, other than searching for intelligent life.
