I have boxes full of old textbooks, clothes, lamps, various house decorative things, etc. that I don't know what to do with

I would rather do something with these instead of throwing them into the garbage

..they can be pickey..I tried to give em a couple of microwave ovens a while back and they didn't want em..I gave em away to somebody that was running a yard sale..they prob sold em..nice ovens. I just didn't need em any more.

Why didn't the salvation army want em?

I'm thinking of just dropping the boxes in front of salvation army tonight

You're not helping them unless what you donate is something they can sell in their stores.

Most of them are not set up to pass stuff too ratty to sell on to people for free, they are only set up to offer saleable goods in their stores. If you give them other junk they have to pay money to have it hauled away.

What IGBT said. I was surprised how picky they were when we donated about 1.5 years ago (when we moved). They also don't pick up large furniture (unless you have a pick up appointment, or if the furniture isn't too ruined).

Then be sure to break in and steal some money from the till, it's just as ethical.

(Krusty with shotgun) just keep driving.

any other ideas what I should do with my items?
they aren't useless and at the same time, I would rather do something with them instead of putting it in the garbage

Everything you listed the SA should take. My G-Ma worked there (store) for 40+ years and unless it was absolute crap they would take it. Somebody somewhere wants it.

Do no mistaken SA for the local landfill. They only take things that are useable and/or can sell for money.

That's a good idea. He's moving and on a limited time schedule. Let's post up his boxes of used textbooks (heavy), used clothes (dirty), "lamps and various house decorative things" (who the hell would want this stuff?). Then monitor and bump the thread each day. Then arrange payment (personal checks ok, 2 weeks to clear though), then package and ship it. Oh yeah, and then move while this is going on.

The SA near my old house very picky and the off loading people would keep the good stuff to themselves (my friend had to work there for a while as part of his community servce requirement so I got the inside scoop). They wouldn't even take back a couch I had bought from then a couple of months before that.

When I moved out I just gave my stuff to a friend who did landscaping, he came in his big truck and took everything away, junk or not, and sold most of it.

but your title says:

I'm moving and I need to discard the useless junk.

Which is it?
