does running folding@home heat up your CPU

I was wondering because my cpu is overclocked if running folding@home would make my computer overheat as it uses cpu at 100% ?

You will get some good heating, but it doesn't seem to overheat. If you have a good HSF, you shouldn't have any problems.

I'm running a 2500+ at 11x200 without problems.

It will run hotter if you force SSE optimizations, but you gain a huge speed boost.

Keeping your cpu at 100% load will mean it runs hotter than at idle, but it shouldn't really have any effect unless your computer's running too hot anyway. In general, if a DC client causes heat instability, any other program that uses a lot of cpu (like a game) will have the same problems.

And there is probably no point overclocking your CPU if you are not gonna use 100% of the speed anyway :p

Actually, i have a 2500+ on stock cooling running at 10x210fsb, 100% stable, so you shouldent have any problems :)

well with my case on and running F@H it causes my pc to crash. I could turn the fan up...but then its really loud. So i took the case off...and now its really loud aswell :(

btw system is an Athlon classic 1.4 running at 1.54. It never crashed during games. but now that its heating up it might have problems, sometimes the air con has trouble keeping up with adelaide weather. It normally runs at around the 63-64 C mark it crashes at 67 C. take the case off and it dropes down to 51 C. The house is kept at 21-23 C. so the old athlon runs pretty hot.

Folding@Home will use the full capacity of your CPU, even more so than some other programs that run it at 100%, because it stresses various subsystems within the CPU that other programs (games, some DC clients) don't touch. If your CPU is unstable while running F@H (i.e. you get GROMACS WU terminations), you should back off on the overclocking slightly and/or work on better cooling, because work from an instable CPU could potentially get corrupted and is not useful to the F@H project (you will get partial credit for it, however).

It will run hotter if you force SSE optimizations, but you gain a huge speed boost.

My P4 2.53 is clocked at 2.85 (19x150) with stock cooler(polished) and the temps are fine, ~115-119f with SSE (-forceasm) enabled. Without it, temps are~112-114f. Same as the others have stated, if you have adequate cooling, there should be no problems. As Josh rightly points out, if the overclock is so high that it causes borderline instability, and wu's crash, then back the o/c down a notch so you can get full credit for the results.

case off and it dropes down to 51 C. The house is kept at 21-23 C. so the old athlon runs pretty hot.

over 60C!! Yikes!! Those old Athlons do run very hot to begin with, but wowsers! Thats burning it up! With the case open, the temps seem reasonable, can you add a case fan to help cool when the case is closed? Granted this negates the sound factor a bit, even tho the case will be closed, but .....

With the case on If i turn up the fan it should keep it around 60C, but I need some sound deadening on the case (running a volcano 9). I'm ordering some for my car next week so i might get a bit extra for the pc

This question is obviously dependant on your system and how far you are oc'ing it. Can you post your CPU temps under load no load? That way you can get answers that are specific for your system.

Came across THIS interesting read at the folding-community.org site. Obviously using the cpu at 100% will increase the amount of heat produced. There are others who have more definitive info about the amount of increase produced by the Gromacs core....... surprising just how much power is sucked down when crunching them!! :Q
