Does renters' insurance cover my losses if I get mugged?

My current apartment lease runs out in two weeks and I'm graduating in August, which is why, instead of renewing for another year, I'm subletting a place for three months. Even though it is two minutes away from campus, I'm not very confident about my safety. I plan on taking renters' insurance to cover losses due to theft/burglary, but what happens if I get mugged on my way to school? If the thief took my laptop, I'd lose some serious coin right there. :(

Would renters' insurance cover such a loss? If not, what kind of insurance should I be looking at?

No, you are thinking of Mugging Insurance.

Alternatively, you might try suggesting to the would-be mugger to please accompany you to your home and rob you there. At that point, you would be covered. Explaining the situation may invoke sympathy.

Depends on where you live. Too many liberals and their anti-gun laws screw that option up for many.

What you want is life insurance. Chances are if you mugged, you'll get stabbed or shot in the face as well.

I'm a big support of concealed carry but this is stupid. If a bunch of inner-city hood rats pull a gun on you, you've already lost. Pulling out a gun turns a robbery into a murder.

Macho-ism FTW  don't be stupid

Read your policy jacket (its a thickish document that your got when you got your policy), as it will tell you what is and is not covered by a policy. If you don't see anything in there that says directly if its covered or not, call your agent.

Nobody in an online forum can tell you if something YOUR insurance policy will cover a specific loss. Your agent is the best person to ask, as they will be able to look at your policy with your company.

This is just like asking "ATOT I have *insert some random medical thing here* what is it?".... go see your doctor or in this case agent and find out from somebody who can give you an accurate answer.

It probably doesn't cover anything that doesn't happen in the apartment. Carry your laptop in a regular backpack FTW.

You can purchase separate insurance for your laptop that covers it everywhere. We have it and I've had to use it once in the several years we've had it.

Renter's insurance isn't standardized like homeowner's. You need to read your policy. Also for many private dwellings or rental complexes under X number of units, most renter insurance companies will not write policies.

worth every penny.
The greatest part is, it's usually sold by the people who would otherwise mug you! They have industry experience, so you know they're the best.

That's just too logical and effort-inducing for ATOT. Are you sure you're in the right forum? ;)

win

EDIT: also if it is your laptop specifically you are worried about, (and if it is a dell), I would call up and add accidental damage / loss / theft warranty coverage to your laptop. should run you about $200-$300.

why would renters insurance cover if you are mugged? seems odd to me.

i would think renters covers your stuff in the apartment or if someone gets hurt in it.

FTW.

Just get something for your laptop and don't carry anything valuable that you can do without.

It varies by policy. When I had it, it used to cover my mountain bikes if they were ever stolen when locked-up outside anywhere.
