Does removing or replacing the hsf on the retail Athlon void the warranty?

Well they do require you use the OEM HSF to be under warrenty... however they have no way to know what HSF you actually use (so you can use any).

You could also use AS, but be warned it is very hard to get off, and you will have to get it all off if you want to RMA the sucker. Put some AS on an old CPU and see if you can get it off, if not, then don't use it ;)
