Jesus died for our sin. God knows best what's for us. These all sound like things one would say to make people feel not worthy.

So does religion really try to promote self-hate?

This is neither news nor politics

OK, the subject is:

There is only one sin and it is the belief there is such a thing as sin and that one is therefore capable of being sinful. This is a form of self flagellation., a way to make one feel worthless, debased and unworthy of God. It is for this reason that Jesus came and died, to take from you your illusion of worthlessness.

But worthlessness runs very very deep and is not so easily expunged. That is why you have to die psychically to go to heaven, and why folk who actually know how worthless they feel, the meek, are those who can actually do it. When you truly feel how worthless you feel you have nothing to lose.

For the rest, any mention of sin is seen as an attack on the ego. Those who are pretending they don't feel worthless see any mention of sin as an attack on them. They think somebody is trying to make them unworthy, not seeing that's what they actually feel.

So there isn't much hope for the sickest, with or without religion. They will never look at themselves or know what they feel. They just point fingers and defend.

I think religions mostly promote hatred of others, but, perhaps in order to really truly hate others, it's best if you hate yourself too?

EDIT: so this isn't purely a troll answer ...

religions aren't promoting the hatred of others, but corrupted individuals in the religious hierarchy... The religion itself is pretty much inert.

I think the opposite is true. Most religions are really just psychological crutches. Have you done terrible things? Don't worry, Jesus died for you. Accept him and you're fine. Are all the choices in life stressing you out? Don't worry about, God decides anyway (saw this on a bumper sticker recently.) Are you poor without access to poontang? Blow yourself up for Allah and get some virgin hole.

It promotes a lack of self reliance or trust in ones own feelings and heart

It creates an external conscience

It creates also and external forgiver.. YOU are the only one that can forgive yourself for you are the only thing that knows your conscience

Humility in the face of divinity is not self-hatred.
