Does Ram Slot Used Matter?

I have a laptop that must be extremely picky with Kingston ram. For some reason the system will only boot with the ram in slot 2 but not in slot 1. I would think it is a defective board but it seems other people have experienced this with Kingston ram as well. Anyway I was wondering if there could be any adverse effects to leaving slot 1 open and just using slot 2? Thanks, Rob
