Does ram make a big difference in BF3?

For instance going from 2 to 4 gigs, or from 4 to 8 gigs? Looking for a cheap upgrade for my dads PC. He's got an unlocked 550 Black edition @ 3.7 and a gtx480 on 1920x1200 but only 2 gigs of ram. Game seems to stutter when it really shouldn't?

IMO 2 Gigs was min, for decent performance in XP. With 7, I consider 4 to be min, and considering current pricing on DDR3, why not load up?

Yes it does.

My rig has only 5GB, with only 1.5GB in use with one tab of Chrome open with Battlelog, Aero disabled, and all other services disabled except for Origin and Fraps. My RAM usage rises to 95%+ and the game even eats into the page file on my SSD.

ddr3 is cheap, ddr2 is not and that's what I'm currently stuck with. I'm just wondering if RAM could be the big bottleneck? My system has 4 gigs and my dads only 2. I definitely stutter, but nowhere near as much as his. even if i run both games on low, and his card is much better than my lowly gtx 260. my systems in my signature.

Just get some DDR3, 8 gigs for $30 at newegg hur hur

If you have two monitors, open up resource monitor on one of them and look at hard faults/sec while you play. This will give you a good idea of how much the harddisk is getting hit.

4GB is absolute minimum for decent performance in games like BF3... If he is going to keep that computer for more than a year from now, I say it's worth it to get 4GB of DDR2 ram. I have 8GB of DDR3 (obv) and BF3 *alone* can use up to 2GB. I think 4GB is enough, but you'll be almost tapped if you have things running behind BF3.

4GB of DDR2 Mushkin DDR2 800 is $44 shipped

If he/you have 4 RAM slots and you're willing to spend a little more, this is a decent deal on 8GB for $80

working set for bf3 seems to be around 1.8gb...its an x32 game so it wont address much over 2gb, add on half a gig for the browser, origin etc, and whatever ur os is using, music etc

basically 4gb physical ram on an X32 pc is the minimum, ideally 8gb on an x64

Well I have 7 64 bit on both his machine and mine. Out of curiosity, I took 2 sticks of ram from my machine and stuck them in his. What do you know? NO stuttering and extremely fast load times in 64 man maps on high/ultra textures! Who knew an unlocked 550 could even RUN that on 1920x1200! I averaged between 30-60fps depending on the scenes of intense action, but I don't recall it going any lower.
