does ram have to be added evenly?

Do you need to have to upgrade your RAM evenly in your slots or does it matter the config of RAM you use. Could you use 128, 64, 64 for 256 and it run fine?

The only time you might want to keep the same size is if the motherboard offers bank interleaving but normally you can run any size you want as long as the motherboard supports the sizes. You can run 1 128 and 1 256 and so on. Computers have been able to do this pretty much from the start.

OH yeah, you should try to keep the speeds the same though, and it would help to use the same brand, like use all crucial or all HSDRAM or all corsair, you can mix the brands and speeds but you limit them to the slowest speed used. It's just better to keep speeds and brands the same. Size doesn't matter.

You shoulda wrote "from the start of SDRAM" 🙂

DRAM, be it EDO or FPM, required installation in pairs 😛
