Does protein powder actually expire?

I'm trying to get back into training and lose some weight and just got around to finding my protein powder that I bought a while back. I have a 5lb tub of protein powder that has an expiration of 7/05...

Is it less effective after this or how can the powder expire? Just seems a waste to get rid of 5lbs of this stuff. :)

The product could chemically change and develop off flavors over time. How does it look, smell and taste?

Well yeah... which is why I wanted to find out if it is safe to use it or not. It looks and smells okay (as okay as it ever smelled), but I don't think it tasted as good as it used to so who knows.

I can whip up some fresh protein for you in a few minutes if you want.

Whip? :Q

Most people just pound it out if they want it fresh.
