does protein make u sleep more?

skim milk

Diamond Member
since I'm trying to gain weight, I try to eat a lot during the day... drink a protein shake right before heading to sleep and eat right before going to sleep.

i sleep about 10 hours per night, every night. I set the alarm so i only sleep about 8 hours but i sleep right through it.

any ideas?

how do i get a normal amount of sleep?

i'm not that active either, i only play basketball once a week.. other than that, i'm either going to classes or at my place for the most part.

Here is a string of layman's logic that has little or no basis in truth (as far as I know):

1. excessive protein slowly and gradually stops up your kidneys
2. kidneys stop functioning at peak capacity
3. toxins start to build up in your system
4. you become lethargic
5. you sleep more
6. you die in your sleep

Think sunny thoughts!

Lets put it this way, I consume a heck of a lot more protein than the average person, as I've been pumping iron since the mid 80's. I've went though boatloads of chicken, fish and meat over the 17 plus years I've been going to the gym, not to mention hundreds of tubs of protein powder. I can honestly say my sleeping is no better or any worse than the average person. On most occasions, the stresses of adult life probably limit me to no more than 6 hours a night, not always sound sleep. I think that's about the norm for a man in his mid 30's.

To much protein creates excess urea. Excess urea, if it enters the blood stream, can cause unusual tiredness.
However, this only occurs in people with kidney problems.

Holy mother of all good guesses! I was partly right!

protein consists of a number of amino acids, some of them make you sleepy and adelphy, tryptophan is not a carb, it is an amino acid, part of a protein.

With google at your fingertips, search.

HA! I consume a hella lot more proteins than you and I don't even work out. 😉 Guess that explains my morbidly obese figure. But I sleep around 8 hours a night, wish I could get more though.

i think it makes you pass gas more.

God, does it ever.

You sure it's the protein? It happened when I made my protein shakes with milk, but I tried making them with water for a couple days and I didn't have any gas at all. I think I'm becoming lactose intolerant

Could be. I think a lot of people just blame protein when they radically change their diet, but there are likely other things involved.

for me, protein seems to be the fuel for the bomb, but I need something like onion to really set it off :Q

u shouldn't eat right before sleeping, that can mess up your sleep cycle, and also stops your body from useing the food properly

exactly why where ever you bought the protein from, should have told you to drink more water when on a higher protien diet.
