Does pretty much everyone have 1GB of ram nowadays?

I just built this system back in August '04, but I was on such a budget to begin with, and it was more than 2x faster than what I was coming from. I have 2x256mb of Buffalo PC3200 ram. Now I'm torn between getting a DVD burner, a 160ish gb hard drive, or 512mb of RAM. I do a bit of gaming like HL2, Act of War, Savage, etc.. so I think the 512mb more would reduce a lot of swapping.

Has anyone went from 512 to 1GB and noticed a big difference? I never have anything running when gaming though, and hell when windows boots up I think I got it down to just 11 processes.

Also, would I be able to mix the 2x256mb of Buffalo with something else like Crucial or Mushkin value? Maybe I couldn't run dual channel anymore, but that doesn't really matter.

I went from 512 to 1Gb at christmas and it did make a massive difference.

i don't think mixing brands would be a problem, but you may have to manually match latencies.

On these boards, maybe. Without checking any retailers, I'd say that the rest of the computing world is probably averaging 256MB.

Confirmed - Dell's website shows a lot of PCs coming with 256MB, with their "cutting edge" PC at 512MB. Compaq's system customizer seems to show a tendency to select 512MB.

At least they aren't still using 128MB on their systems. Boot up, load the OS and all the bloatware from the companies building the things, and you're already out of RAM.

I liked going to 1GB from 512MB, but it mainly shows when I am editing WAV files or images in GIMP. BIG difference when it can cache some of the workload to RAM. And if you want to run a RAMdrive, there's space for that too. I have a 120MB RAMdrive as temp space, courtesy of AR Soft RAMdisk. There have to be better ones out there, but this one works for now. It's limited to somewhere between 120MB and 130MB max size.

I use 1GB of paired OCZ PC3500 EB for my gaming machine.
Its definately worth it.

My office machine uses a single 512MB Mushkin PC2700 Black. Thats plenty for burning a DVD while sharing files and playing an emulator.

Oh, crap!
What I meant to say was: "Thats plenty for running Office 2003 and spending all day at charity web sites."

Most of the computers we have at work are running Windows 2K w/256MB of RAM. They run fine for what we need them. But 1GB is a must for most other systems (especially when running WinXP.

being that this is an enthusiast(sp?) website/forum, you will find most have 1GB atleast. after looking at your system i would definately go with 1GB since you game. i know that i am pretty safe at 1GB for everything i do -> video/graphic editing/encoding and gaming. never gone over 1GB 🙂

So, if a person currently has 1GB of RAM would they see much of an increase in performance by going to 2GB? I'm currently in the process of upgrading/buying a new PC and would be interested if anyone has any opinions. Thanks.

I would say no, you would not see much of an increase in performance, UNLESS you do massive 3d rendering work, or something of the such.

Edit: And with the current price of ram, there isn't much of a reason to go to 1GB unless you truly don't need it. I just upgraded myself, and it is great, but I still want either dual core or a MP system. I multitask too much.

Thanks...I'll probably look at a better mobo or faster CPU then, instead of going up to 2GB. I hardly do any intensive stuff on my PC in the first place so 1GB is probably more than enough for me.

Yeah, good call. Hell, more HD space would be better than the extra 1GB.

Yeah, currently, 1GB of RAMs is mainstream

I noticed a difference when using photoshop and the fact that now I can set resolutions higher when scanning.

It's usually not a good idea to mix different brands of RAMs, but sometimes, if their specs are similar, they may work just fine.
