Does Plextor's BURNPROOF technology actually work?

I have an older CD-R drive, and I make a few coasters every once in a while...I am looking to upgrade to one of Plextor's CD-RW drives which has the burnproof technology...

I was wondering, how will burnproof help me? Is it some type of marketing strategy, or does it *actually* work? I am looking for an IDE solution, so which drives incorporate this technology?

For all you Plextor owners, how many coasters have you made? And what are your system configurations (ie. cpu, mb, ram)...

Also, do you notice a difference (other than speed) when comparing your plextor drive to your older cd-r drive?

Thanks!

I think all BurnProof does is have a larger buffer than usual... I could be wrong.

I read it works by if the CD burner runs out of buffer the burning stops and refills the buffer, then starts burning again once the buffer is filled.

i think thats it.

For one, The only plextor drive with burnproof is the 12/10/32

Secondly burnproof is not a larger buffer, but rather a system that allows the drive to resume burning from where it left off or had errors. So as long as the error wasn't fatal, meaning wrote something to the disk that can't be there. But if it just ran out of data or if the track writer errored and didn't write it can just resume and start where it had troubles.

I have a plextor 12/4/32 SCSI and compared to my 2/2/6 IDE Ricoh its awesome. Never had a single coaster except due to dirty media. This drive does not have burn-proof.

Burnproof is actually BURNproof. Buffer Under RuN Proof. Just eliminates buffer underuns. I only have a Plextor 8/4/32a with no caosters so I wouldn't really know how BURNproof works. But I'm sure is that if a buffer underun occurs or a write error(non-fatal) then it just resumes where it left off.

Yes, it works great. For a while, I had to run my 12/10/32A with DMA off. If you tried this with any other high speed burner, you will get coasters faster than you can buy blank cd's. When the drive burns, an amber light binks on and off, indicating that the drive is burning. Once it stops blinking and turns green, that means that the drive stopped burning to wait for the buffer to refill. Once it refills, the amber light goes back on. This is what indicates that BurnProof is going into action. This happened dozens of times during a burn with DMA off. So in short, yes, it does work, and is not just some kinda marketing hype.

Warrenton: Burnproof is only on the 12X write version? Damn!

I was looking to get the 8X write version, since the price was low...Hmm, is it worth getting the 8X version, which costs ~$100 less?

I am on a VERY tight budget...So, what is the "real world performance" or burnproof?

BurnProof saved my very first cd with the 12/10/32. I started burning a cd and left for a while. When I came back I saw that an app had crashed and froze my computer. The buffer was at 0% and the drive was just sitting there. All I did was close the crashed app. The buffer refilled and the drive chugged away. The resulting cd was readable.

Pretty cool.

Hm, my friend is getting buffer underruns with his Plextor 12x burner still. I guess he's not using the right type of mastering program.

BurnProof Needs Software that know how to activate it.

Nero5 has this capacity.

Actually its Sanyo's burnproof since they announced the tech and plextor uses sanyo drives:)

Doomguy: Are you sure?...so do I just go out and buy a Sanyo?

On a side note; how does the HP 9110i CDRW compare the the 8x write version that Plextor has?

I know many of you have something against Adaptec's EZCD, but that's no reason to make false statements about it. The latest update for EZCD does support BurnProof. Plextor even bundles it with it's drive, and I used it myself and have witnessed it go into action.

yeah, i'm not so sure of his assertation that plex's are really sanyo drives. can you give a link to support that? i'm curious.

i have a 12x4x32x scsi plex and its great. i would spend the extra money to get a plex, whatever speed you can afford might be.

Well, it doesnt really directly state anywhere that Plextor drives are re-badged Sanyo drives, but all the little hints point at the possibility. If you look at Plextor's webpage under the listing for the 10/12/32 drives, there is a small copyright notice at the bottom indicating Sanyo made the Burnproof technology. A couple years ago when I was in the market for a 4X12 CDR, I was digging around for information on Plextor drives, and found some information at the time that indicated all their drives were re-badged OEM drives.

Sanyo probably just licensed it's BurnProof technology to cdr makers to apply to their drives. I hear other manufacturers such as TDK have come out with a drive that has burnproof.

yeah, licenses. all it does is stop the laser when the buffer is full. i believe software has to be able to use it in order for it to work.

--

i cannot say whether or not burn proof works, but the only coaster i have made with my 12\10\32a is when ezcd crashed.

i have thrown quite a lot at it with normal use while burning, but i have not exactly bothered running some CPU demanding program along with it... except i have done rc5 while burning with no problems =P

c533a @ 800 on BM6.
256 MB SDRAM CAS2
modded promise RAID 0 w/ 2 wd expert 18GB

it is most definitely faster than my previous burner =P modded 7040a to 7060a

i cannot say that the fact that i have only had 1 coaster, out of over 100 burns is due to burn proof or a good burner =P

Yes, it does work, and is awesome technology. I can't wait to gt my 12/10/32 ;)

The review I read about it, when it first came out, the people ran like DVD movies and stuff while burning, with no coasters...
