Does PeoplePC Suck?

Bitek

Disclaimer: This is for my parents who care nothing for real-performance, gaming, big downloads etc.

I was going to build them a sys for Xmas, but they were looking into a sys from peoplepc. The basic sys is $25/mo for 48 mos for a HP 1.1 ghz cel w/ 128mb, 40gb hdd, and a monitor. Does not include a printer, dvd or cdr. What makes this otherwise unappealing package attractive is it includes unlimted dial-up in the package (aol, at&t ?) It also alleviates me as tech support (and I live 2k miles away.)

I can't find anything particularly bad about this, and seems like a reasonable alt. What do you know?

sure for 25$ a month.. thats what makes these PC's so appealing 😀

just check the total payout. make sure your not paying 2000$ for a 1000$ PC

<< yeah.. im a DELL fan also >>

Hey buddy.... I didn't say I was a Dell fan 😉.... just pointing out there might be better options out there. 😀

People PC's are made by HP. The problem with that deal is you are stuck with 48 months on pople pc as your isp. What if they suck? what if they go under? what if your parents want to go broadband at a later date? i think you could find plenty of deals from pc makers and get access for about the same price and not be tied into a 48 month commitment.

Same reason why I tell people don't use the MSN rebate cr@p. If you don't like the service you are stuck for a couple of years. Even if you go to a different service you would still have to pay for the PeoplePC service too.

i'd say build them a cheap duron system....

from newegg:

1 Amd Athlon 266 bus 1Gig $66.00
1 Ecs K7S5A $57.00
1 256 DDR Memory $35.00
1 20Gig Harddrive $77.00
1 CD RW 16x10x40 $70.00
1 Creative Labs 56k Modem $18.00
1 Ati Rage 128 Pro Graphic $22.00
1 shipping $24.00
1 Case $60.00
1 17" Samrton Monitor $89.00

total $518

that will leave you about 15 bucks per month for net costs.

cut costs further: use a duron (800 is cheaper than 750 on newegg right now!) and the BIOSTAR M7VKS mobo. has onboard sound, video, network.

Comes out to $1200. Seams a bit steep. Dell sends me crap too; I think The University sold me out. 😉 But for $1200 you can get a decent laptop. And isn't Dell usually higher priced? So you could get a better system cheaper through another brand.

And I guess they got desktops starting at $700. Aparently, in my catalog you can do 45 payments with no payments for 90 days.

I use PeoplePC as my ISP at home as no DSL/cable available. It costs me $10 per month unlimited, new users are $12-14, I think. Its a fine ISP-rarely a busy signal, go about five hours before auto logoff, never any hassle about nearly 24/7 logon.

Never bought their equipment so I have no idea about that. I suspect that is where they make their money. Buying a cheap, quality computer elsewhere might make more sense-but then you would be the help desk.

BTW, PeoplePC has some kind of user interface for its ISP to make it seem more AOL'ish. I haven't loaded that up in probably two years so I can't comment on it.

i bought my lappy through peoplePC last christmas(P3-700, 256MB, DVD) top of the line back then, i gotta good deal through my company though, it was $1600 for the lappy, a printer and case and 5 a mo for net which i dont use since i got cable at my house, remember that 1600 was SWEET back then

Dont you have to send the computer back to people pc or extend your lease when it is done? Or are you buying it from them?
