does partitioning a drive really help?

since this is OT and i can be totally wrong and not care: it helps, but not that much. it's a good idea to have atleast two partitions though. you can mostly make up for lack of partitions by regularly defragging.

I've never heard of partitioning your hard drive helping boot times and file access. If anything it hurts it somewhat, but either way, the difference is negligable. I say partitioning is fine, as long as you don't overdo it.

i'm thinking the only way partitioning helps is that it puts boundaries on what parts of the drive your files can fragment to.

Wrong forum, try the OS forum.

No, it doesn't help access times, au contraire, it increases them as the head has to move over empty space to access the next or previous partition.

It really doesn't matter though, the time save is so incredibly small that you won't notice, it is better to keep it organized.

I have four partitions, one / one /home, one /usr and one swap partition (using tmpfs for the /tmp)

I use partition for organization, and I can format C: and reinstall Windows without losing all data, especially docs. Thats why I partition into 2 drive.

Same. Windows on one, all my personal folders (school papers, pictures of friends and stuff) one one, and then programs on a third.

Of course you have to break it down man.

Partitioning on a smaller drive is retarded, it wastes far too much space. WinXP complains when it has less than what, 1 gig free? If this is the case, that's 1 gig per partition. On a 20 gig hdd, with 2 partitions that's basically 10% wasted hard drive.

I don't break it down as far as n0cmonkey. I use folders.

I haven't partitioned one of my HDs since the 32MB FAT16 limitations. But when I picked up my 300GB Maxtor with the 16MB cache, I had to partition it. 300GB in a single partition was a little too overwelming. So it's split evenly in 3 partitions. I couldn't image how long it would take to defrag 300GB worth of data.

My friends and I even developed a naming scheme for individual files. It worked in the 14.4 days, but not now. 😛
