Does optical really make a difference?

/\/\ does it really make a difference in terms of sound quality? I will not be watching DVDs on my computer, just mp3s and games. I have a Chaintech AV710 with mini out and the optical out, however I felt it would be best that I hook up my Xbox with optical since I watch DVDs on that.
 
i doubt you would notice a difference between that and a digital coax on an xbox/gmx but the anolouge will be diferent cause it's not digital which means you wouldn't get true surround with that setup
 
on the GMX, the 5.1 analog out on the sound card is converted with a cable that has 3 minis on one side and a digital coax on the other. Would the quality be that much better?
