Does OpenOffice 2.4 (i.e. current) work with Vista?

Setting up new Dell Inspiron 530 for my brother today, and I downloaded Open Office and installed but it is generally locking up when trying to open and view .doc files. I've never used OO before. Is it not compatible with Vista (Home Premium) or is it just a bitch to use? My brother's not very sophisticated with computers, so if using OO is a bad idea, maybe he should stick with Vista's defaults or get Word or Office or something?

Try giving the freeware, opensource Abiword a go.

It works with .doc files and will probably be faster than OpenOffice and smaller if you just need a word processor.

It works fine in both Vista32, and Vista64 for me.

Edit:
I have had some issues with the 3.0 beta though. General lagginess and crashing.
