Does one simply destroy and discard an expired passport?

I'd keep it... might make renewal easier... and an extra form of ID around can never hurt... unless you have something to hide :)

no you have to go to the post office get a new one and they take your old one.

Technically it is still the property of the goverment.

You have to bring it in and get it voided before you get a new one.
