Does One need HD Drivers For a New Rig?

Or... are the drivers only for special functions like RAID. If just using the drive nominally, does one need to get any HD drivers off the manufacturer's website or is his something XP already has?

Remember the drivers you have to use for Windows aren't drivers for RAID stuff, but drivers for the S-ATA controller. Even if you plug one disk to a simple S-ATA controller which requires drivers, it doesn't change a thing.

Some onboard S-ATA controllers have the ability to run in 'ATA mode', so you won't have to install drivers (I think it gets detected as a simple generic IDE controller).

If you want to install a fresh copy of Windows onto a SATA drive, you need a floppy which should come with your motherboard to make the installation software recognize the drive during installation.

It depends. Nforce3 chipsets recognize the SATA drive. I tried installing the supplied drivers, and was unable to get the O/S to install. If you're using a single SATA drive, Nforce3 does not require special drivers...mine recognized the drive, and installed O/S just fine. It shows up during POST as a 5th IDE master. This is with a Neo2 Platinum board.
