Does older content on Netflix more likely to buffer over newer content?

Trying to figure out if my ISP or Netflix is the issue with buffering. It is weird.

I am the only one in the family who never sees buffering on Netflix but I rarely use it. Though I do use it on my PC instead of through a Roku. Maybe that is why ?

Hardwired PC vs spotty wifi devices everyone else uses? I'm so happy my house is wired with cat5e.

In short, Netflix places caches of content they feel is likely to be popular (eg a new season of Stranger Things) in ISP facilities to reduce streaming issues.

So to answer your question, yes it is entirely possible for older content to be more prone to buffering.

Dang, that's interesting.

I tried reading some pages on that website and quickly went "wat." I am not a network person, lol.

I used to install those servers! They were through the Akamai network. The more people that watch a movie, the more bits of it that get cached so the ISP doesn't have to go out to the backbone provider to grab data. The tech was essential to allow Netflix to operate back in the 1.5Mb DSL days.

Older content that isn't being accessed as frequently is less likely to reside on the tiered storage system Netflix has installed at most ISP offices.

Thanks.

Is Friends (1994) (The Show) considered old content?
The real question would be: Is every episode accessed frequently enough to be worth caching in the closest storage tier at your ISP? Last I checked, the show isn't even HD, so the buffering might indicate that Netflix servers are having to fetch some of the content from deeper / slower tiers of storage.
