Does Obedience school for dogs really work?

Mill

Lifer
I've tried everything with my dog. She's almost a year old, but her behavior has not gotten any better. She chews on everything that isn't bolted down, throws temper tantrums in which she urinates or defecates on the floor when she is mad at me. She gets mad when I am at work, or am gone for a couple of hours. I come back -- take her out and she will not go. I will stay out with her for over an hour and she will not go. I will come back in and she will then go defecate or urinate somewhere in the house. I've tried no chew sprays, light spanking with newspaper, time-outs, verbal commands, citronella, lemon juice, etc. You name it and I have tried it.

She still goes wild when I have guests and jumps on them. She also has started a new trait in which she puts her leash in her mouth and chews when I take her out. I've soaked the exposed end in lemon juice, citronella, and even no chew spray. It doesn't work. She has a Plastic Kennel that she stays in for short periods, but she also has a 10x10 metal cage downstairs in the basement for when I am at work or school. She goes beserk when I return and will tear anything up and engage in spiteful behavior when I get back. If she manages to get off her leash, or gets out of the house she NOT come when called, and will run from me. I literally have to chase her for an extended period of time before I can finally catch her. Typically neighbors will help me corral her, or sometimes a dog will come by, and I can get her when she starts to play.

I do take her for walks, and she plays at my Girlfriend's house on 5 acres with other dogs whenever I go out there. I play with her, she has TONS of bones, chew toys, stuffed animals, etc. I've tried everything, so now I am thinking about Obedience school. Anyone tired it? Does it really work?

Sounds like a heckuva bitch, there. I think you ought to show the dog whose the Alpha Dog. I'm not suggesting beating her into a bloody pulp, but you may have to lay down the law, sometimes. She'll respect you that way. When she's tearing up stuff when you're gone, it's her way of showing she's mad because of being ignored.

Mill dunno if that would work at this age or not. It is pretty easy to mold their habbits when they are young like 3-4 months old. You will have to check around. I had my dog trained for like 4 months or so. The trainer used come down and take him around for like an hour or so. My dog was pretty much like yours chewing stuff. He used to go wild when I took him out. Most of it is pretty normal but the mine always wanted to go out and never urinate indoors. It could happen when the dog is excited. It was after a year or so that my dog calmed down. Beating won't work the trainer beat the hell out of my dog but wasn't that effective. Alot depends on the breed also. I got a german shepherd, they have just one master so he just obeys my brother.
I think she will ease down, nothing to worry but for the indoor urination and stuff take her to a vet.

This is why I don't like dogs. Puppies especially.

We got our dog when she was 4 months old. She was like you describe (except the pooping in the house) and she didn't really calm down until after she was 2 years old. So, you only have a year or so to go! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

You can try obedience school but it is only effective if you keep up on the training. It is an ongoing process. You can't expect to take your dog in for 2 weeks and get back a trained dog that is going to be calm and listen to your every command.

The dog needs to know who the boss is. Sounds like she's running all over you. Clearly she thinks she is the boss.

I took our dog to an obedience school and they introduced me to a collar that tightens up on the dogs neck when she pulls and digs in these dull prongs. The harder she pulls the harder the prongs dig in to her neck. This was an excellent tool to get the dogs attention when she was misbehaving. Of course, you have to have her on a leash when doing this and use verbal commands while correcting the dog. So, when the dog misbehaves you say loudly and firmly AH! or something to get the dogs attention and give a quick hard yank on the leash to send her the message (correcting). After a while you will be able to just use the verbal command and she will know.

Did you mention what breed ? I didn't see it. We have a Pomeranian and they are very disobedient, but not to the point where they wreck things and run around uncontrollably. Some breeds are naturally wild and upbringing also has a lot to do with it... how old was the dog when you first got it ?

Mine is a lab mix, they are chewers but mostly diggers and they like to run. I don't know what kind of dog the OP has though.

She is a Shepard-Something mix. I know she has Shepard in her, but the other part is ??? to me. Maybe Beagle...

It does work, it's not too late/she's not too old. We took our dogs last year and they were both over a year old, it was very good. I suppose it might depend on the trainer, but I think you'd find it pretty beneficial if your experience was like ours.

There are still some behaviors I'd like to work on, will be going back soon.

Yes, dog obedience class does work. I took my Rottweiller in for a eight weeks course obedience training after he chewed up my sofa. Beside learning the basic commands Sit, Heel, Stay, etc, the instruction will also show you how to correct bad behavior problems like chewing or diggin holes. It costed me $250 since the instructor was a former LAPD canine instructor. He trained his Rott to pee on command.

BTW: if you want to know how to stop her from chewing PM me.

What breed?

She's still a pup and will act like that for another year or so. Obediance school works, but I think its more to teach the owner how to handle their pets. Sounds like your letting her grow up bratty. Use a big voice when your saying no. Look her in the eyes when you're angry and be firm about it. But once again remeber she's still a baby... more like toddler, praise her when she does good yell when she's bad.

Too late for that if she's a year old. Obedience school would probably help some but she's been given way too much time to run things.

what books did you read on training before getting the dog? or did you wing it? not a good idea since dogs grow so quickly and you only really have one easy chance to mold them at the various stages of development. obedience school is worth a try at this point.

She needs a friend to play with. My lab (with a bit of husky) chewed my whole damn house up in her first year. Crapped on the floor, pissed, no matter if you let her out or not.
My older lab that I had given to my grandparents when I moved into my first apartment started jumping their fence, so I got him back....that immediately calmed my puppy down.

The next year I found two puppies in the middle of the highway at night. I ended up keeping them, and never had the problems, since they played with each other all the time. Sure, they'll have accidents as puppies, but that's expected.

I decided that the next time I decide to get a baby dog or cat, I will get two. Works much better.

I just listened to an interesting interview on NPR, talked about out smarting your dog & using positive reinforcement.

click on "New Work of Dogs' Author Jon Katz" to listen

@ least it's free😀

yea heard that program too. dunno, the bad training or lack of it he described just seems to be a lack of effort by the owners really. if you just go to the bookstore theres a full shelf of dog training books.

as for getting two dogs. good in a way, but bad too. you will have to train even better to make sure they don't reinforce each others bad habits/ignore your commands to play with each other...

I have trained 2 cats to use a toilet.
I have trained them to jump onto and through objects on command.
They are much much much harder to train than dogs.
And, I have also trained my dog to do many things including jumping through a hoop.

I would buy a clicker and a book on Clicker training such as:
Getting Strated Clicker Training for Dogs it comes with a clicker.
