I've had 2 drives in my RAID10 array die in a little over a year. (WD 200GB SATA). Both made the system extremely unstable in the week or 2 before they stopped spinning up, and I can't help but notice that every time the system is rebooted, or even when the CPU goes into standby, a loud click is heard from each of the 4 drives in the array in rapid succession, as if power is cut to them without parking first. After the instability when the last one was dying, I turned RAID off and am now using them as 4 separate drives. No more noises when the system reboots or goes into standby.
Is this odd behavior of the NVRAID controller a major contributor to the drives untimely demise? Kind of defeats the purpose of RAID. Besides, I'd say the system is overall faster just using the drives separately, with one for Boot/OS, one for apps, one for videos, and downloads, and one for essential files to back up.
