Does North Carolina have 4 seasons?

I live in New England currently, and enjoy having 4 seasons, although I despise winter really...I love going outdoors and doing things and playing basketball, and from november-late march it's pretty much impossible around here. My grand father always wanted to go to north carolina before he died, and my mom's kicked around the idea of moving there. For those of you that do, obviously there's a spring and summer, but is there a fall, with foliage change, and some form of winter? What are the winter's like down there?

we have 3. winter, something semi-decent with new growth, summer, something semi-decent without new growth.

winter varies on what area of the state youre in, i live in the eastern part, not far from the coast, so its not bad, and rarely snows. snows more often a bit west of here and througought the rest, probably moreso in the mountains.

summer is humid and craptastic where im at.

i dont particularly care for the weather here.

the leaves change color and fall off the trees in the fall. Its very pretty. Don't expect snow to stick to the ground in the winter, and don't expect your roads to be plowed the next day if it does. I'd say winter days average in the 40-50s highs, so very mild winters. The one problem I have with winter here is every time a major storm hits the east coast, NC ends up in the "pink" ice zone. I'd take snow over ice any day.

I've been here for one winter (from MI) and I really miss brisk fall weather and a real winter. it's like you can't enjoy spring because it's not really all that much of an improvement on winter.

my brother has some friends in the western end, he likes to visit them in the fall, says the weather is perfect there that time of year.

I would think it would depend on the location. The western part would have a short winter, nice fall, decent summer, and a nice spring.

Ever consider moving towards the northern west coast? Washington or Oregon maybe?

The far western part in the mountains, like Asheville, has more of a New England type four seasons.

The weather in NC varies a bit from west-east.

The mountains have a much better four-season year than the rest of us. In the piedmont..sometimes we get snow, sometimes we don't. If we do get it, it usually doesn't stay on the ground for long. We had a "crazy" snow in my area once, dumped 24" in my backyard (yes, I know that isn't a lot). It only lasted for 5 days.

The coldest it usually gets in the piedmont is the twenties. Our spring is alright, summer is hot/muggy/humid. Fall isn't long enough (thats my gripe). It takes too long to cool off, and by the time it does, you are sort of in "winter" already.

But yeah, the mountains have better weather IMO.

There is, but the local's call it "winter". I moved down to Raleigh about 8 years ago from the great lakes.

From my point of view, spring, fall and most of "winter" are really just like spring/fall up north. Summer is a killer though. Basically I wear shorts/T-shirt about 10 months out of the year.

North Carolina's a pretty big state, you'll need to let us know what part of the state you're talking about.

I live the Western part, where there are mountains, we definately get 4 seasons. But it's not too hot in the Summer, where I live has historically been a Summer resort. People from low-lying areas and the coast come here to escape the heat.

I've lived in a lot of plaxes (NYC, Miami, Paris, Berlin, London etc). I like the weather here more than any other place. Winter is usually not too bad, usually failry cold and quite arid (very low humidity) but there will always be at least one pretty good sized storm. Spring is fantastic, the trees plants and flowers explode. Summers OK, about mid-80's are the norm for a high, lower if you're higher up, but can be somewhat humid. Fall is great here too, until all the leaves fall off. Big leaf watching season here for tourist. Although I thought the colors were a little better in NE (but when I lived there one year it was a draught condition, that'll help the leaves turn brighter colors.)

My mom lives in Asheville and I think they do have 4 seasons. Fall is great there, lots of colors. Summer is also great because it rarely gets over 90 degrees in the mountains. I?ve been during snowy weather. A few years ago I went on Thanksgiving and it snowed but was melted the next day. I believe they get snow occasionally in the winter just not too much in accumulation. I think we get more of a winter here in DC and that?s not saying much.

As far as snow, really depends where you are. There are some mountains counties near Asheville (Buncombe county) that get a lot more.

Kinda of the same thing with rainfall. There are some higher mountains West of where I live. They seem to "block" a lot of the rainfall. They get about 2-2.5 the amount we get here.

Bottom line, the mountains, and which side you're on, can really affect weather.

We have 3 seasons

Tourist season #1 when we are overrun by swarms of oldies from Florida that can barely see out of their Lincoln Town cars and are scared to drive over 20 MPH on our mountain roads
Tourist season #2 when we are overrun by swarms of Yankees in their SUV's and all the bad manners and horn honking they bring with them

And a couple of weeks a year when there are NO tourists and this is paradise

OBY Tourist season #1 and #2 overlap in the fall.

If they call it tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Technically New England has 6 seasons - spring, summer, fall, and 3 winters.

HeHe, that is where I live. I acutally work down the street from LR. It is humid, and we do have bugs, but it isn't as bad as some places futher south. I visited some friends in Birmingham recently. Heat, Humidity, and Bugs were much worse there.

The Hickory area (Catawba Valley) has a moderately hot summer, with a mild fall, winter and spring usually. This year we have had few days over 90 and none over 100. We also had no snow to speak of last winter. Most years we have a couple days that reach 100, and a few times where we get 1" - 5" of snow, with maybe one larger snow.

Where you around when we had the blackout in the LR area of hickory from the snow storm in like January of 2003?
