Hi, I got a question for those internet buff around here about news server.
Is there like a master server/root server out there? I mean all these ISP or Paid Newsserver provider gotta sync their server to something right ? I am just wondering if there are ways to setup ur own news server for only a few newsgroups. My isp newsserver retention sucks, so i am just trying to find a solutiong 🙂

Thanx

There are various news servers, but they talk to each other, peer-to-peer. In fact, it could be said, that Usenet newsgroup servers, are the orginal "peer to peer" information-sharing (and file-trading) network. 'tis a shame that Usenet would therefore be outlawed by the "Induce Act", should it ever be passed into law here in the US.

So to answer your question, no, there is no "master" newsgroup server, just like there is no "master" internet IP router. Everything on the internet is based on peer-to-peer networking principles. Some commercial newsgroup services will allow you to "peer" your server with theirs, although the details and the costs I do not know, you would have to work it out with them. It is also possible to run private (non-peered) newsgroup servers, like grc.com does.
