Does netflix get all movies late?

I just added Avatar and it says release date is 5/20. The DVD is already out, I can go buy it anywhere. Same with Sherlock holmes and the Blind side was late as well.

Anyone know?

Meh, as far as I'm concerned, the release date is when Netflix gets it. There's nothing I want to see so bad that I'll go pay $15-20 for it.

But yes, I believe they agreed to push out their release with all the major studios in exchange for more streaming titles.

They have made some sort of agreement with Warner Bros. and other companies that they cannot rent out the movies until a certain amount of time after their release date.

For whatever reason, those companies felt that Netflix and Redbox were hurting their income by renting new releases.

Yep, the delay is annoying.

I've decided to just wait the extra 4 weeks. If it's a movie that i want on Blu-Ray and it's put out by one of the studios that forced Netflix into that agreement, I'll buy it secondhand.

It makes sense, the people that are dying to see it will go out and pay full price while those willing to wait will just wait around until it shows up on netflix.

It's fine by me. I'll take the delay in exchange for the increased streaming, well worth the trade-off to me. If it's something I absolutely have to see right now I'll go to the rental store and spend the $4.

If they had stuff for rent on day 1 it would seriously undermine new sales. The studios cant afford that, so I guess they struck a deal with netflix. And for those who argue "Hollywood and Blockbuster had stuff on day 1" trust me when I tell you that Netflix is many times more successful than Hollywood or Blockbuster could ever dream to be.
Thats why Blockbuster moved to a web-based home delivery system. And Hollywood is pretty much on their way out.

Why deal with delays? Blockbuster has a web based service just like netflix but you can also exchange the movies in the store with no delays.

This ties into the thread I made about Epix. Warner, Lionsgate and 2 other big name studios started Epixhd.com. That channel will have all the new movies from those 4 studios before any others.

I'm not trying to spam Epix, but its the way things are going. Look for the studios to try to get a bigger piece of the home viewing market by doing things like this.

I wouldn't mind an internet TV channel but I hate the fact that they have any connection at all to the cable companies. The reason I canceled my cable is because I hate my cable provider with a passion. As long as TV has anything to do with subscribing through them I refuse to do it. If I had a good DSL option where I live I'd cancel my cable internet just to spite them.

But the problem is that the studios/networks are greedy. So when you want to watch a movie through your cable/satellite provider, remember that they want $$, the networks want $$ and the studios want $$. This new model is supposed to take out the middle man.

Also...you might want to look at addressing your resentments. That's not healthy man 😛

They made deals with quite a few studios that delays most releases 28 days. I think New Line was the latest.

Studios make the most money off DVD sales not rentals so that is why netlfix has to wait and also why they pull titles sometimes from streaming.

From EPIX's faq:
Is EPIX a cable TV channel?
You bet! EPIX is a 24-hour-a-day cable TV channel.

How do I subscribe to EPIX?
EPIX is currently available from Charter, Cox, Dish, Mediacom, Verizon FiOS and several Insight and NCTC television providers. Call your television provider and ask for EPIX today.

I don't see any reduction in middlemen. Epix is still through the cable provider, just like any other channel.

As for my resentment for the cable company, any company who's cable box literally starts smoking and smelling like burning electronics in my living room is not on my good side. Their response was "Oh, well if you drive all the way to one of our service centers we'll exchange it for the exact same one". They refused to come out and replace it themselves, had no other options except for the box that started to smolder (unless I wanted to pay 3x as much), and refused to even compensate me for the days that my cable was unwatchable because their box was a melted pile of electronics. If I hadn't been home to unplug the box it could have burned down my place.

On top of that they did some absolutely ridiculous things with my bill. Once I had to move but was staying inside their service area. I called them and arranged to have them transfer my service to my new place. Well, a few days later I noticed a $250 charge on my bank account (I had automatic withdrawal setup to pay my cable bill, that was a mistake). Apparently, they had canceled the old cable account at the old address and opened a new one, no big deal right? Well, when they did that it flagged my old account for not returning the cable box (the same one that later melted itself) and charged me for it. Later that day after they made the withdrawal they realized that I had opened another account and still needed my cable box. Rather than give me back my money they just credited it towards my future charges on my account. I called to figure out what the heck was going on, they told me it was all fine, I wouldn't have to pay my bill for almost 4 months, and that there was no way they would give me my money back any sooner than that. Finally I got them to agree to give me it back after 2 hours on the phone getting transferred (and disconnected) half a dozen times but it still took almost 2 weeks before the money showed up in my account again.

I hate them, I think they are a lousy business, and I will do my best to make sure they get as little of my money as possible.

That's they deal they made with the studios, they got to put their TV shows and Movies online but get the DVD and Blu-Rays 4 weeks after release.
