Does my OS use more than one core?

Specifically - Unless running an application designed to use more than one core, does my OS (Vista x64) only use one core for normal usage (e.g. moving files, burning data disks, running a macro). Does the OS always use the same core when only one is required?

Applications consist of threads, some application only have one thread but even in that case if you run multiple applications you wind up with multiple threads. You probably have hundreds of threads running on your system (check taskman), the system will balance those over both cores.

Thanks.

PS - I have owned a computer since around 1983 when I made my first purchase - Timex Sinclair 1000. Vista x64 was the easiest OS install to date.

I remember the TS1000, I had one on order when I decided to get a TI 99-4A instead. Has been while hasn't it 😉
