I need help with this if someone could please.

I get the error "Unsupported CPU installed" at bootup when I try to install the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Edition Processor.

You know what's strange is the previous processor, AMD Athlon II X4 635 which is the one I am using now, is Socket AM3 just as is the 965 Processor I have. So I don't get why it wouldn't install.

I have the 125 Watt version for the 965.
 
The reason would likely be the wattage usage of the CPU. As was mentioned your motherboard only support CPUs using up to 95W. This is likely both for electrical and thermal reasons. Since your new CPU is 125W max, the motherboard won't allow it.

On the plus side you should be able to buy most any current AMD mATX board (make sure you get one that uses DDR2 memory if you want to be able to use your current sticks) and put it in that case.

How much would a motherboard like that run?

And, there's no way to override the wattage somehow, huh?

This one would work fine, Gigabyte isa good brand and it's on sale at Newegg for $60 with free shipping. It supports all the AMD 6x Cpus (though you may need to update the BIOS).

Windows 7 is pretty good about handling mobo changes, so it you're running that I doubt you have to reinstall. It shoudl autodetect your new hardware. If you're running XP you will likely have to do a clean install or a repair installation.

Wow, that is a nice motherboard and cheap at that. I almost can't believe it. I'll have to purchase that board next paycheck for sure. I favorited it. Thanks. I've never installed a motherboard before. Will that fit in my case?

You're very welcome! Yeah, it's a great chipset and manufacturer. It's the same size as your current board (24.6" vs 24.3") so it'll fit just fine. Gigabyte will also include a fairly good setup manual which will walk you through each step of the installation process. And I'm sure if you get stuck there will be folks here to help. You might want to pick up some thermal grease. Clean the old grease or thermal interface material (TIM) off the heatsink and processor, then apply the new grease. You can find how-to guides on the internet.
