he eats what we eat (sometimes), sleeps in our beds, goes out with us most of the time...

I mean does he realize he's not one of us? Does he realize that he's a dog not a human?

No, he thinks he's a dog and also that you're a dog.

Pretty sure he does... Have you seen dogs meeting other dogs as opposed to meeting new humans? There's a huge difference in their reaction.

As much as he is able, he understands that he is a dog.
When people say the dog thinks he is human, they are fooling themselves.
A dog has no idea what a human is.
Rather, the dog thinks the human is a dog, much like humans think their dog is "thinking" he is human.
Dogs defer to you not because you are human, but because to them, you ar the Alpha Dog in the pack.

This makes sense. Perhaps animals in general only think in terms of threat/non threat.

He is lucky to know his name. He doesn't understand the concept of species or animal. He follows instinct with a little ability to learn. You are trying to apply a human construct for thought to an animal without the ability. In short, no, he doesn't know he's a dog.
