i had my pc on pretty much all day, and i just installed motherboard monitor 5. it's reporting my cpu temp to be 34C. i have a retail XP2000+ w/ stock hsf. does that temp seem correct? if so... WOW! with amd's reputation of their cpu's running hot... i would be quite surprised if this were true :p what temp's r u guys running with ur XP cpus?

how are you measuring temps? Socket-thermistor?

What ambient case temp?

What motherboard?

Most socket-thermistor's read CPU temps well under actual DIe temp.

i'm using "motherboard monitor 5" to measure my cpu temps. right now, the side panel is off my case becuz i was doing hardware swaps. i'm using an epox 8k7a. what is the best way for me to find out my cpu temps from windows?

well, if you're using MBM, then you're reading the 8k7a's socket-thermistor.. in which case, i've noticed that the Epox boards (in general), read under actual DIe temp between 5-12C on average.

thanx for the feedback mike :) question... is there a way for me to get a more accurate temp reading from windows? if not, how accurate would it be if i rebooted my machine and check the temp in the bios? would the temp drop a lot between the time i shutdown, to when i actually make it to the bios?

MBM will read waht the BIOS will give you, save at a known CPU Load. THe problem with rebooting into the BIOS and reading temps from there is that you don't know BIOS load. Granted, Socket-thermistor's are slow-reacting, but an in-windows/during-load reading will be better.
