Does my CPU bottleneck a 1900XTX?

Hi

Few weeks back people were after me that my CPU was bottlenecking my GPU. Now few days back people were against me when I said that a 1900XTX would bottleneck a P4 3.4GHz which is actually equal to slower than my CPU for gaming.

I have added a poll. Please tell me whether my CPU bottlenecks my card or not.

CPU: AMD 64 3200 Winchester

GPU: Radeon X1900XTX

sorry, don't know how to add a poll. Anyway, just tell me this:

1)Bottlenecks at stock and games won't run fine.

2)Bottlenecks at stock but games will run fine.

3)Doesn't bottleneck at stock.

4)Doesn't bottleneck at 2.4GHz or higher.

How does one end up with 1500 posts and yet come away with so little?

Answer: It depends on what resolution/settings your using. Gonna play at 800x600 with everything set to low? Yes, the CPU will be the bottleneck.. you'll probably only get 150 frames/sec.

Gonna play at 1280x1024/1600x1200 (or something thereabouts) with 4xAA/16xAF everything on high? No CPU bottleneck in that case. The GPU will be the bottleneck.

Let him learn :( it just so happens that he was to young to find the form and his brain can't keep with the minimum knowledge of standard that majority of the users have in this video anandtech forum ;(

I think we should award him. the technoob rank when he hits 2000 post , then i hope he could create decent threads.

A 3200+ rated processor will bottleneck an X1900XT-X but it will still easily be playable. When I had an X1800XT I was facing CPU limitation with my stock 3400+ and when I gradually OCed it to 3700+ speeds my performance increased noticeably. When I hit 3700+, the effects of OCing became less apparent all the way up to 3900+ which showed practically the same results as 3700+.

P.S. X1900XT-X is carp.

Your CPU is a bottleneck for that card, but that has little to do with why you are having issues with games, akshayt.

P.S. No, it's quite obviously trout.

No dude, the 2ghz A64 doesn't bottleneck your X1900XTX.

A CPU bottleneck would be a situation where, for instance, an X1800XT and X1900XTX perform the same at the same settings & IQ.

Would you see gains taking your A64 higher through overclocking? Of course, that is why people overclock and buy fancy heatsinks and watercooling. Are those gains enough to give you sleepless nights about buying a GPU that isn't reaching its max? Don't be silly.

Check out the FiringSquad.com's Battlefield 2142 CPU Performance Preview, it was posted just a day or two ago. Look at the performance numbers for various CPUs. It's only one game but it ought to give you an idea.

it will pwn ur 6600GT after it ran a 1000000000 mile marathon.

And since most games require video processor pwr more greatly over cpu power i highly doubt your cpu is bottle necking. However, if you noticed that great of a increase in performance after overclocking, it might be your processor, but the reason why the game runs faster is because when you boosted your FSB, you also boosted your ram timing times unless u used a divider, and you quite possibly could of boosted your PCI-E bus frequency.

If anything is bottle necking look at your hard drive and concider raiding it. Hard drive technology is the most ancient thing in the computer life line. Were still on magnetic plates, something thats been around since the pre - 1980's. And even at full SATAII speeds, the IO rates are still snails compared to the processing rates and IO rates of RAM.

Think of it this way, if u run 3dmark with CPU rendering vs GPU, even the most highly overclocked cpu will still only pull off sub 15 fps.

Id get a hd to pair your 160gb, raid0 it, wait til xmas when conroe priceses settle down a bit, and then upgrade then.

Your CPU is the bomb akshayt, the X1900XT is slowing your system down quite a bit. I'll lend you my X1900GT @ 715/1800 if you lend me your X1900XT. The X1900GT would fit your system so much better and you'll be able to exceed the playability you had with you XT because it will all match better.

You should have bought a 7900GX2 with it's 4X anti-bottlenecking driver enhancements.

You can't should, would, could anything.
You can't go back in time and change anything.

The OP did what he did and now has to deal with whats going on right now.

No biggy.

Relax, Wreckage was being sarcastic. (At least I hope so anyway)

akshayt can't even get one CPU and one GPU to work right, giving him 4 GPU's to juggle would give him an aneurysm.

You guys too can't get the CPU and GPU to work right. All yoyu have said till now didn't do anything. You don't even have an idea of the problem.
