Does my 8800GT need a cooler??

I know this sounds like a dumb question, but humor me. I have an 8800GT (BFG model from Best Buy) with stock cooler. I'm using both Rivatuner and ATI Tool for my overclocking ventures. I've pushed this card to 740 core / 1700 shader / 2000 memory, and ran ATI Tool's artifact scanner for 10 minutes. The temperature slowly climbs to 70 C; then tops out at 71. Never seen it go higher. Both Riva and ATITool confirmed the same temperature. Riva's temp vs. time graph shows a big, long flatline, steady as a rock, at 71C.

Then I ran through a few levels of Bioshock; alt-tabbed out and saw the temp at about 68. Oblivion, however, encountered a few crashes but I also have a crapload of mods running that I'm sure are causing some issues of their own.

In short, I can't make this puppy warm up beyond 71 C. But if I push the clocks any higher, I get artifacting. I have my fan speed set to fun 50% below 70 C and 80% above 70 C. I've seen people here run into the 80's, 90's, even up to 108 in one case.

So, I'm wondering.... could I just have a bad temp sensor on the card? Is mine just inherently cool? Should I bother with a fan if I can't get over 71 C anyway? Will it help me OC this thing further if it's not getting all that warm in the first place? If I'm getting artifacts and it's not due to running too hot, what else would be the culprit? I do like that I can run at 740/2000 and still keep a (seemingly) cool card, but... I dunno. Something just seems off.

Sounds like you're fine. I run the stock cooler at 65% and my load temps only reach up to 68. No problems playing game and don't see the money and effort worth putting a stock cooler on.
