Does MS Messenger Update Automatically?

Greets,

I have XP Pro and the annoying MS Messenger. I use it occasionally, so I don't mind keeping it around. However, a few days ago, something startled me.

After booting, I was prompted to upgrade to the new version. I declined, because I had to quickly move to something else and figured I could do it later. *Well*, after a couple of days, the reminder quit displaying itself, leaving me to wonder if it had downloaded the update automatically.

I checked my version last night, and it is 4.6.0082. I don't know if this is the latest version (couldn't find that info out from MS's site).

To the best of my knowledge, I have all the automatic updates in XP shut off - giving me the ability to upgrade when I decide it's best.
Blindly upgrading a component of the O/S isn't my cup of tea, and as a system admin, I like to read ALL of the documentation that goes along with a patch, et. al.

I appreciate any experiences that you might be willing to share.

its definitly possible.. i've unchecked auto-update.. and also got a similar message... so i ran this from the run window

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

actually uninstalls msn messanger.. use somethin les invasive 😀

I appreciate the quick response.

If our assumptions are correct, then this is ludicrous. M$ is becoming more invasive by the month.

Thanks for the syntax. I think I'll run it and get rid of the thing. I can certainly live without it.

Any more takers on this subject? 🙂

XP has a feature whereas bits can be drizzled down for system components in the background. Even tho' you say "No", the installation executable is stored in your %TEMP% folder, waiting for you to say "Yes". Why it automatically installed is a new one...it shouldn't do this. Even a force-upgrade shouldn't do this (force-upgrade simply prevents you from logging on until you upgrade...MS *occassionally* has to do this because older versions are incompatible with newer versions of the server software).

Bld82 actually has a couple of security fixes added since v4.6 went Gold. If fact, every update of v4.6 since December has been concentrating primarily on security...all part of the "Trustworthy Computing" initiative and such. And they aren't going to release ALL of the details about every patch, since some security fixes aren't even known yet by the hacker community...pre-emptive strike, so to speak. If you were previously using v4.0 Windows Messenger that shipped with the OS, you were *really* vulnerable.
