I tested multiple smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, Nokia Lumia 920, Xperia, etc.

The HTC One has the best sound quality and is the best for music.

Then I would say 2nd place is Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5 tied.

The Xperia z is terrible for music and sound.

loudspeaker quality on phones is still mostly horrible, even laptops are way better. but typically one uses headphones to listen to music from phone, and in this case, y, tremendous progress has been made, phones can sound good. for audio quality comparisons and analysis, you can see reviews at gsmarena.com, they do a pretty good and in-depth job at reviewing these and other technical aspects of phones.

I agree with Germanic - at least between an iPhone 5 and an HTC One. The speaker on the One is the best that I've heard on a smartphone and the music sounded pretty good. The iPhone 5 wasn't bad with headphones, but with a speaker it's pretty poor.

If I had to choose the best sound between the phones i currently have, S3, S4 and iphone 5, it would be

1. S3
2. S4
3. IP5

In general I am satisfied with my newly aquired S4 but the S3 was much better in headphone sound while the S4 has a better speaker than ip5 and s3. I dont use the job given ip5 for anything other than work email. I find the music app totally lacking in user experience.
