Does Mobil always authorize credit cards for $101?

No, actually, a nice little trick, if you are within a buck or two of your limit, and need a tank of gas, just go pay at the pump. It always goes thru.

Just pay that off, as fast as you can.

Usually, they only authorize it for $1. :)

In my experience, I have found, online, that they only authorized it for $1, everytime I buy gas.

That sounds high, but I guess with gas prices as high as they are $50 isn't enough for everyone. I used to drive a truck with a 50 gallon tank for work, and I always had to fill it twice.

Well they authorized mine for $101. WTF? I'm sure it'll go through with the correct amount but in the meantime it's tying up a lot of money.

I've heard of certain chains doing that. If I ever run across one, it'll be the last time I fill up at their stations. My local station only ties up $1.00. Now THAT, I can handle.

if you're $101 from your limit i think you need to look at other aspects of your spending

I've got another one but this one has a really low interest rate.

When you swipe your card, the gas station will charge you $101. When you are done, your actual cost is not actually transmitted to the credit card company until the end of the day when the gas station does its batch transfers. I think they do this for speed.

BULLSH|T! There is nothing wrong with Capital One. I've had Capital One for 2 years now and I've never had any problems with them. They have been great. I was late paying the bill one month and I called them and they removed the late fee. Match.com autorenewed me for a 6-month subscription that I didn't want and Capital One refunded me my money. I got this card the day I turned 18 so of course the credit limit is low. I now have an American Express card through BOA with a 4600 limit.

I've heard of some places that pre-auth like that.......and I won't ever go back there. Most mine ever gets hit with is $1 as a pre-auth.....only to see if the card is active.

I have a gas station located a few blocks from me that has stopped accepting debit/credit cards altogether and they only accept cash as payment. You also have to pay first before pumping at all times. I have been speculating on how long they will remain in business.

I have to say, I've had Capital One for about 8 years now, and they're just fine for me -- of course, I pay off the balance every month, and get a fairly nice rebate check from them once or twice a year.

I had a bank account with Wachovia that randomly switched routing numbers (when they were acquired by First Union) -- they sent an alert that that would happen 12 months before it did, and nothing near the transfer date... Anyway, online bill pay screwed up, and Capital One was very nice about it. They forgave the late fee, didn't charge me interest for not paying on time, etc. Wachovia on the other hand... Well, let's just say that I now have an account with Washington Mutual (another good company.)

I'm happy to call out companies whose customer service sucks -- Cingular, Seagate RMAs -- but in my experience, Capital One has been just fine.
