Does Microsoft allow reinstalling XP OEM on partially new system?

My current system is dead and it's looking like it's a mobo problem, although I have not finished investigating this.

Current mobo is MSI Socket 939 mATX with NV 6150 integrated graphics. If I have to replace it, I would like to go with an Asus AM2+ mATX with NV 8200 IG (of course, new proc and new mem).

I am wondering if Microsoft will allow me to reinstall XP from my present Windows XP OEM CD, or if they will refuse validation because they will decide I have a new computer for which my OEM disk is not valid.

I remember reading that, for Microsoft, getting a new motherboard IS getting a new computer, but that they might cut the user some slack in certain circumstances, when they can make sure that there is still only one computer per OEM disc.

If it has been a couple of years since you activated it it will probably activate without calling them. When I have been in your situation and the activation failed I just call the 800 number and tell them I am doing a reinstall after some hardware changes. Just don't mention motherboard.

mention schmention...

It is perfectly acceptable to make whatever repairs to your system are needed. Just have your existing key handy when/if you have to call, since the Call Center Gnome will want it. Tell him/her "Hello, the motherboard failed and I had to replace it to fix the computer. May I have a new key please?", and you will be given a new key.

MSFT aren't concerned with people keepig their systems going. They *are* concerned if you are somehow subverting the licencing system to make computers for lots of people.

Thanks for the replies guys. Very helpful. I am no longer worried about being able to reinstall my OEM XP.

Where do I get the Microsoft number to call? Is the number provided in a screen message when automatic validation is required?

Yeah it is provided once you select your Country.

At the same time, try the Internet activation first. If that fails then call.
