Does Mandrake 8.2 support Firewire and 802.11?

Last night I formatted my month or so old HP Pavillion laptop (which came with XP Home) and put on Linux Mandrake 8.2. Since both the OS and my laptop are pretty new, it was able to reconize my hardware except two things. My IEEE 1394 Firewire card and a PCMIA 802.11 Wireless Notebook card from Belkin.

After searching the websites for both products, none of them support Linux of course. Seeing that Linux is still lacking features, does the kernel that comes with Mandrake 8.2 support the IEEE 1394 and 802.11 protocols? If it doesn't then I will go back to XP, but if there's a patch or easy way to compile it or add it into the OS that would be great.

Kinda sucks when these two cool techlongies are here and available and Linux has hiccups with them 🙁

Depending on the chipset of your wireless card it may be supported. I dont have any clue about the firewire port though. Try downloading and compiling a new kernel. 🙂

To activate Belkin IEEE 1394 card try this:

1. change to root
su root

2. modprobe ohci1394

What kind of wireless net card do you have?
