Let's put the question of why personal stuff is being sent to work. Who cares really. If it's illegal or against company policy they should jsut tell the employees.

What I don't understand is (at least based on this thread), how are there so many people that lack basic common decency and sense. I could understand accidentally opening mail that is clearly addressed to someone else but to regularly do it on purpose shows something is really lacking in the moral fiber of the person.

I am guessing many of you work in small offices where most of the mail is invoices or junk mail so the receptionist just deals with it.

The mail is property of the company. It's the same thing as e-mail and it's not unusual at all to inspect every e-mail looking for any proprietary or unethical behavior.

the hell it is. the email is going through their servers, with their domain name and is coming from their machines, and there will most likely be a notice that this is the case.

mail...from someone not the company, to someone not the company. the company doesn't fucking own you when you are there. if you want to try the "well the mail is in the building they are being forced to handle blah blah" angle, they can just fuckin pitch it back in with the outgoing mail as not at this address.

this country has gone so fucking downhill "with its bend-over for the corporations and government to stick it to us" mentality. what a bunch of fucking shit, that's the dumbest thing i think i've ever seen you post

Only way they could open it, is if it address to the Company itself, but not if it is addressed to ME, Care Of, My Company.
That indicates the letter / package is for ME only, not them.

They can open any mail sent to the office.

your office is not your personal mailbox. if you don't agree with accepted practice, have your shit sent to your home.

I've never worked anyplace where that occurred. Even teh five-sided fistagon. They'd x-ray and scan the mail and packages, but never open them.

Seems odd to me that a company would allow someone like a mailroom person to open mail that could include information thats private. So if an investor buying the company sends the CEO a letter detailing the purchase, some mail room person is going to open it? Seems like a bad idea to me.

What about a drug test result being sent to an HR person? Or a complaint against someone sent to an HR person? Just seems odd to me. I could see the company being in some serious trouble if a mailroom person revealed some sensitive information.

Why would you assume a mailroom person would open the mail? In my case, the mailroom person does not open the mail, my secretary does. I would think that the CEO's secretary could do that, too.

As for HR mail, I would not expect that anyone but HR people would be allowed to open that.

I open the mail where I work. Well not the letters, just the large envelopes and boxes. I'm a materials handler. I look for invoices and stuffs.

Our policy is that all mail is opened, and I have no objection to it at all. There are a few reasons for this...

-One of our departments processes Health Claims (and is HIPAA Regulated), so we need to make sure that any PHI that might be addressed to the wrong person/dept is properly routed, otherwise we would regulary have breaches of PHI.

-From what I've been told, in the past there were problems where a Check would be mailed to the wrong person, and instead of the recipient following through to find out what dept/who it was supposed to go to, they would just let it sit on their desk for 6-12 months. All checks/money orders/etc are removed from the mail and delivered to Accounting so they can handle it properly.

-The handful of anthrax scares that happened after 9/11 made some powerful people in the organization nervous. This was actually the straw that broke the camels back...either that or they just used it as an excuse to implement a policy that they had wanted to implement for a long time.

Edit: Why in the world would someone receive personal mail at work?

Also, at my office, just because the mail is addressed to a particular person does not mean it is suppose to go to that person. The staff who opens the mail needs to check to make sure the mail gets to the right person.
