Does Mafia II Ever Get Good?

Seriously, I have to be about half way through. So far it seems the game just consists of you being a delivery boy for the mob. The last mission I played involved me selling cigarettes for $2 a pop. How is this supposed to be fun? The story isn't even good so far - completely unoriginal. The original was at least had enough combat to make it fun and a somewhat interesting story. There were also some side missions if I remember correctly which impacted the game play somewhat. 90% of the MII consists of driving which isn't even fun ("Oh I hit a poll because the cars handle like shit, you die").

I only paid $7.50 for the thing and I still feel robbed.

If you already don't like it then you won't like the rest. Every mission is basically the same. Not much variety at all and you really don't get to explore the city at all either. Plus it's real short. In the end though I still enjoyed the game because the voice acting was so well done, oh and the ending sucks too.

I thought the game was worth the fifty dollars I paid, but maybe just barely.

There is no comparing to the original Mafia, they did that one so much better, but Mafia 2 still has some excellent features, such as graphics, voice acting, awesome weapons etc.

Sadly for you it doesn't. I admit the story of the game is impressive but why would you play a game that is more of a movie.
And the part with drive and drive and drive. Common. If i need a game to drive i will play NFS with some patch of ancient cars...

Agreed, although I found the shoot-outs to be entertaining.

The story, characters and voice acting had me hooked about 30 minutes in, only to let me down completely at the end. 🙁

It starts out fun and it continues being fun for the remainder of the game. If you aren't enjoying it maybe it just isn't for you.

Hit the nail on the head.

IMO it definitely starts out fun but lost its appeal after a few in-game hours. I still enjoy the voice acting, and the shooting mechanics are a lot better than most 3rd person sandbox games. It just doesn't FEEL like a sandbox game. For whatever reason I don't feel compelled to run/drive around the city just to screw around. I did that all the time in GTA (even 4) and most sandbox games. This one just goes from mission to mission in a pretty predictable and sort of boring way. I don't know... I got it for free so it's hard to hate. Still, I was expecting a bit more after the way it started. With all the games in my backlog I'll be hard pressed to find a reason to go back and finish it.

what he said...
i paid something like 21 for the game and DLC.
i thought the cinematics and characters were cool
fighting was cumbersome

But i thought what took away from teh game way too much was the endless driving. Even missions had driving. The city looked awesome but it never had you truly do anything with it.

Agree with this (except the combat part, I really like the shootouts).

I found myself constantly pressing tab to see how much further I had to drive. It felt like more of a chore than fun. Even speeding past the cops wasn't fun. It was easier to just stop and pay the fine than try to escape.

The city really looks impressive, but I felt no need to explore it, they really could have done so much more. I paid $12.50 for it and was worth that, though was disappointed it was called Mafia II. If they named it something else I would have liked it more. Not nearly the variety or fun of the original.

The game was bug free and I never had a crash or problem with framerates. Although Joe got stuck in one of the later levels and thought I was going to have to restart, and apparently a lot of people had that problem, but was able to get past it.

SPOILER
it was kinda weird that the only tie in was going and killing yourself from the first game

I got it for free when I bought the EVGA GTX 470 (before I stepped up to the GTX 570)...I still play it once in a while for kicks...

Also i would add to say that in the 1st game driving was so awesome just because you didn't had such cars in other games. But now....
again i consider this game a good movie and that's all

The big failing noted in most reviews and totally accurate is they created a pretty big world...and gave you nothing to do but drive through it. As opposed to GTA types where you interact all over the city, this one's there just for scenery.

But I did enjoy the game nonetheless. 7/10

I'm a sucker for gangster stories and this one, while cliche, was well done, so I enjoyed it for that, but yeah I agree with most of the criticism in this thread.

IIRC, the cigarette sales level was actually the worst one. I think the levels definitely get more entertaining towards the second half, a lot more indoor or close-range stuff, and not much more FedEx.

EDIT: And yeah, the city is mostly just for looks. Same case with the original. Most of the complaints I hear about it can be applied just the same to it.

"I was driving trough the neighborhood and then my cousin Vinie said: stop the car this is the guy". I miss this type of action....

I think it is all good. but if you are expecting GTA, then you will be disappointed. Massively so.

Consider it more of an interactive movie.

The story was amazing, but unfortunately. 2k ruined the game by forcing the devs to rush it out. And selling what ever they find left over from the rush as dlc. Keep playing though, its well worth the play through. It gets better.

I paid $70 for the collectors edition. If anyone got robbed it was me, and the other fans of Mafia 1.

haha, ouch. I felt it was well worth my $7.50. I'd say that I don't understand people who buy PC games--ESPECIALLY PC games--new. But then, I need you guys so that I can get mine super cheap a month or two later.
