Does Mac play .avi files with base software ?

thanks guys. i figured since it is compressed it would need a codec. its extension looks like its [VTV], i dont know what that means. my wife wanted to show her class an episode of documentary i found on bittorrent. anyway, maybe the mac she has in her classroom will automatically know to download the right codec. macs are supposed to be user friendly right
 
ummm... VTV sounds like the name of the group that released that particular file, not the encoding. I am betting on Xvid
