I am not actually sure if longer school days and years actually HELP with the grade. 50 minute class and 7-8 class seems to be what my brain can handle back in higher school. Longer school year, debatable but I still don't think it improve the grade too much either.

What problem I think is WHAT is being teach during class time and HOW willing the students are willing to learn.

I don't think longer days lead to better grades, just as the longer I work the quality doesn't increase. I think they need to start cutting out the "crap" from the classes if they want more learning time. Too many times I hear from my kids how they watched a movie in class.

One thing that seems to make an enormous difference is WHEN school happens. Lots of attention problems and learning difficulty are directly caused by a lack of sleep. Kids need a lot more sleep than adults. Instead of 8 hours, it's more like 9 or 10 hours. Moving school so it's 1 hour later makes a big difference in how much the kids can learn in the same amount of time.

I loved those days. One time we watched Forest Gump and wrote essays about a character of our choice.

Yes, the incredibly short attention spans of children today seem to point they need to stay in class longer so the point sets in...

And I am not actually sure if shorter school days and years actually HELP with the grade. Is it better or worse? It's just different. And other factors, such as reduced time between when the kid gets out of school and when the parents arrive home after work.

Longer school days lead to children being even more bored at school and hating it more than before. Schools should increase the amount they teach rather than the length of the school day.
Want kids to learn, CHALLENGE them..

Right now, your 6-7 hour long school day contains about 1-2 hours of new content, 1-2 hours of review and then the rest of the time is wasted on telling kids to shut up.

How about make 4 hour dedicated block of only new material, then 2-4 hours optional review ....

Let the smart kids get in and out quick so they can get out of the school environment and learn on their own

Keep the dumb kids in the classrooms longer

But, most parents treat school as a babysitter..... and they don't want to spend the time with their kids that they should...

Interesting concept. If you get good grades, you can leave sooner and do stuff. If you're a retard, you stay here until you stop being retarded :D

Better grades != better education.
Shens. Passing people from grade to grade then giving them a diploma even if they can't read is the best thing we can do at this time.

Who cares? No matter what they get taught most of them are going to be stuffed into cubical worlds where they'll be kept like animals who are fattened for the slaughter, become obese, diabetic, hypertensive and depressed to the degree that they'll have to take psych meds just to face their miserable existence. At least let them have a life as children before chaining them to a desk.

I agree with this.
