Does Liveware really need to be installed?

Does Liveware have any impact on EAX in games, 4 speakers set-up, DVD Doby Digital Software decoding, etc?? Can I get the maximum potential out of the card with just the drivers? I basically have had LW installed for 2 years and never use any of the functionality. I killed it completely from my start-up and rely on programs like WinDVD and Mediajukebox to adjust sound.

Thanks,

LJ

Not true at all. What LarryJoe asks .... on EAX-enabled games, if you use the Creative SoundMixer and instantiate the EAX effects from the SoundMixer program, you'll get a lot more effects--you can also set the fade balance in a more intuitive manner using the SoundMixer for 4.1, 5.1 sound systems.

The SoundMixer is only available to you after you install Liveware; therefore, thorin, you are wrong.

EDIT: the bitch part of it is that Creative's Liveware adds an ass load of stupid startup programs...just use msconfig to disable all creative apps at start up. (if you're running Win2k, you can download the msconfig command utility--search the forum for a link).

Thanks. Come to think of it, I do rely on the front to rear fade controls. I just installed XP and am waiting on Creative for XP drivers and I guess XP Liveware.

MasterHoss - I have a SBLive5.1, using just the simple drivers(ie no LiveWare) & I DO have a "SoundMixer", which allows front 2 rear
fading on my 5.1 speaker setup...so how do U explain this???

Since I am not interested in cheesy organ music (MIDI) or chipmunk voices I found the only useful function included in LiveWare! was toggling the rear output from the Creative SoundMixer. The included EAX stuff is mostly for old games which did not have native support or something (prolly why some people still associate EAX with cheesy reverb). It's been awhile, but you may at least be able to do a somewhat reduced custom installation of LiveWare! to just get the SoundMixer and some other crap. The ass load of startup crap can be disabled via Creative's own settings.

LiveWare has no effect on EAX in games. You can have additional effects using SoundMixer and various presets (Reverb, echo etc...). If EAX is in the games then you DO NOT NEED Liveware.

The Environmental Audio Extensions are enabled in the drivers, if the game takes advantage of these then there is no NEED for Liveware. If you choose to create your own EAX Presets for some (older non-EAX enabled/designed) games then obviously since you set this up through LiveWare you would have to maintain your Liveware installation for your presets to work.
