Does Lite-On make the best CDRW drives?

I always hear ppl recommending Lite-On CDRW drives... what's so special/good about them? I am looking for a new CDRW drive, and am deciding between a LG or Lite-On... Lite-On is slightly more expensive...

Lite-On is readily recommended because they are good and inexpensive. The best would have to be Plextor followed by Yamaha IMHO. I've never had any experience with LG so I can't help you there.

Whew! I was afraid to open this thread, since I just laid out some bucks for a new Lite-On 16x.
🙂
Glad to see I made a good choice.

<< When you guy plextor you're paying extra for the name. Like the others said, lite-on is the best bang for the buck. >>

Agreed. I've had both Plextor and Lite-on (among others) and the Lite-on was every bit as good as any for what I use it for (back ups, music & copy).

Not a chance, best bang for the buck usually.
But if you had the money IU'd rater a Plextor, HP, or Yamaha drive over Lite-On anyday.
LG's made some very nice drives since their 16X model as well.

Just be aware that on at least one model (LTR 32123S) Liteon are messing with there firmware and it will no longer copy SD2 and it wont flash backwards.

You hear a lot about Lite-On's going bad though. I have only owned Plextors previously and never had a problem. I have owned my Lite-On for about 3 months and its starting to flake out.

Yes but with the money you saved by not getting a Plextor you can afford to buy 3 Lite-On's . 😉

And who knows in 3 months how fast they will be running at.

I got the Plextor 16x/10x/40a and I RMA'd the first one. I was never impressed with the Plextor, plus they package their drives with totally useless software IMHO.
This drive is definately NOT worth what I paid for it.

My next CD-RW is going to be a Lite-On, hopefully I will like that one better.

Thanks for all the answers everyone! Looks like I will spend the little extra and get the Lite-On over the LG...

A brand is only worth their support and warranty. Specific models must be compared on their own merits.

Lite-On is currently popular in some circles due to recent models having full CloneCD functionality for cheaper than good manufacturers like Toshiba, Sony, LG, etc.

Plextor gained most of their popularity in SCSI and seem to thrive on brand recognition rather than actual functionality and are generally overpriced. Check out CloneCD compatability and you will see Plextor is sadly lacking.

Word on the street seems to be Lite-On copy protected data discs very well but not so for audio. You have to keep your ear to the ground now to know which drive is worth buying for game backups at any given time, and should avoid flashing the drive BIOS in general since Plextor and Lite-On amongst others are disabling ability to read some copy protections in updates.

I've personally owned a Lite-on and I had no problems with it for a full year... but then just recently I tried to write in raw format with it and was givin an incompatability error, turns out that my drive did not support it. So I went out and bought a Samsung drive and proceeded to burn my disc. Other than that I think they are a little louder than other drives when working. They are great values though... worth the money you pay for them and then some!

I own a Plextor 24x... I went through all this Liteon vs Plextor when I was buying mine... at first I was going to buy Liteon...then i decided on Plextor. Yes it is more $ but I felt better about the purchase.

Hey look the simple fact is that if u get burnproof, smartburn or any of the other burn protection, you have a good cd-r burner.

now if a burner can copy almost any kind of copy protection then u have a cd-r drive that is awesome...

Lite-on in that respect is an awesome drive cause it always burns to perfection. So do many other drivers. so i think the only think one should look for when buying a cd-r drive is the featurs and the price.

so, Lite-on is a excelent drive... if ppl will say "but how long will it last" then i gotta say to them...hey after 2-3 years u going to change to a faster drive anyways...so what difference does it make??

Can anyone post some specs to the Lite-On drives? I wanna check out what it supports/dont support before I make my purchase... Thanks!
