I have a phone cord that's pretty long connected to my modem from the phone jack. Does the long cord effect the speed of the modem? (It's about 40 feet long)

It shouldn't.. but it's possible.

Unlikely though, unless you live to a substation or something.

When I was on dialup, I used a 50ft phone line, and it was fine.

Years ago I used to have a 40+ foot phone line running the connection and it was fine also. I wouldn't think you would see a difference.

Your download speed : 3173086 bps, or 3173 kbps.
A 387.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 373482 bps, or 373 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier

Thanks for adding that little taunt for those of us who suffer with dial-up :| :p

Ah good good. I was under the impression that the cable used by the phone company was of a different quality than my 40ft cord here, excuse my ignorance! Also, isn't coax cable affected by length after 100ft?

As long as that 40 feet isn't wrapped around 10 or so power cords and other forms of interference, you should be fine. :)

Heh, excellent...that means my crappy connection is hardware related, woo!
I drop once in a while and connect at 45.2 kbps every time. Never, ever higher or lower. (Roommate uses the same account gets 52 kbps or so tops).

The shorter the better. But also think about how much copper is run from the street to the house. Your extra 40 feet is probably nothing in comparison.

EDIT: The main problem with long cords inside the house, is they are usually cheap crappy wire compared to whats in the walls. Just try it out, if you still get good connection speeds then nothing to worry about.

check your numbers, some ISP's have different phone numbers for different speeds.

We both use the same number so it's not that. I don't really care though, we're getting cable for $20 a month, woo!

Different modems will always connect at different rates.

Besides, there is nothing wrong with 45.2kbps.

If you think you're getting dropped because your connection speed is too much for your line, set the maximum connect speed to say, 42.6k and see if it goes away.
