Does L2 cache matter at all for a server?

hi! i'm building my own server, and right now i'm in the research stage. the cpus i have in mind for the server are the celeron and the p4. from my understanding, the only significant difference between the processros is the L2 cache. i know l2 cache is important for gaming, etc, but as i said, this will be a unix server, without X installed. so i guess my question is, 'is l2 cache is worth considering?'
 
thanks for asking, lol, i knew i forgot something. it will serve files to my home network, and http and ssh to everyone.
 
In your case , probably not. I still have customers that run P200's running unix.

They're cheap ... If your going to run Linux, I'd get a 845e based mobo, this is supported in RH7.3 .

The granite bay mobo is reported to work w/ RH9.0 .. Haven't found any info w/ Canterwood & Linux yet.

Cache can make a huge difference for many server applications, esapecially databases, but for a homeserver, you'll likely be just fine with anything above a Pentium("Pentium 1" that is🙂).
