Does KT333 chipset support Barton's? (Specifically Biostar M7VIF). I have a couple of these MoBo's and Biostar's website doens't list 333FSB CPU's as supported.

Anybody know of a good site for user results of CPU compatability? I know I've seen one; but I can't find the link.

Thanks in advance!

I thought MOST KT333 boards did support 333Mhz FSB cpus. Of course there may have been a early KT333 and a KT333ce chipset????
BUT it will take a Bios update if it is doable.

Yea I just looked at your board and you are SOL in teh 333Mhz FSB cpus. BUT the mobile Bartons are 266Mhz FSB so you cab still run those and just change the multiplier

According to Biostar web site 2600+ is tops for that mobo and I saw nothing in the BIOS update notes to give hope that a BIOS update would help.

This is little to do with the chipset. Other than 166 MHz CPU bus support ("FSB333" for the marketing folks), there is nothing else a chipset needs to have for Barton. The board's BIOS needs to know what a model-10 (Barton/Thorton) CPU is, that's all.

Thanks for the info guys.

The Biostar BIOS for this board is very limited. So it may be a no go. I was hoping someone out there has put a barton in a M7VIF and could report on their findings.

Many of the first KT333 boards were [and are] limited to 133MHz FSB, for whatever reason.

VIA basically had three revisions of the KT333, CD, CE, and CF.

The CD supported a "133FSB" (no 1/5 divider) while offering a 166 memory support. CE revision upped the FSB to 166 bringing it in sync with the memory speed. The later CF revisions supposedly are just KT400 silicon nerfed down to a KT333 level (e.g. no AGP8x).

I have a Jetway V400DA (KT400 chipset) but it doesn't support a Barton! When the board was cool (stay overnight), it can boot up at 166 FSB. It also regonises a Barton correctly. It cannot boot up again on after switched off. I don't know why. The vendor said the board does not support 166 FSB officially.

Hey, I just checked. The latest BIOS does give me the option for 166FSB for both Memory and CPU!

I only have a mobile Barton 2400+ to test on it though and I'm pretty sure the Biostar will chose the 5.5 multiplier and there is no multiplier adjustment on the board or in the BIOS.

Thanks for the info Braxus. The boards I have must use the CE revision allowing for the 166FSB adjustment for CPU. I'll check to see if it says "CE" anwhere on the board.

the only sure way to find out I think is to pop the heatsink off the northbridge and take a look at the chip markings itself.

One more question. Is there any chance I coiuld damage my mobile barton by putting it in this MoBo? I think I'm going to try it, if there is no chance of me burning up my nice new CPU.

If its either POST or no POST I'll do it.!

Yes there is ... the mainboard might get the CPU voltage all wrong ... BZZZT ...
