Does Kimchi Ever Truly Go Bad?

I had a brand new unopened jar of kimchi in the fridge that "expired" Jun 2024. I opened it, and the top layer looked dry to me. I just dumped it on the compost pile, and the lower layers looked fine. Smelled about like it should(rotten cabbage :^D ). Did I screwup by throwing it out? Does it ever get harmfully bad?

Kimchi's amazing! It's like sauerkraut on steroids. Time got away from me on that jar. I kept bypassing it for other things, and didn't realize how long it was in there.

Eh... kinda, most fermented foods don't last forever (like honey-forever) but if supplied fresh ingredients will continue to 'grow' healthily. If not supplied fresh ingredients they will 'grow' unhealthily. I probably wouldn't eat year-old kimchi but I might make 10 new batches of kimchi with 10% year-old starters.
